My eReader Idea

By J.A. Dettman

ereaderI’ve had this idea for an eReader device for a while so I mocked one up in Photoshop. The basic concept is that the device opens like a book and is designed to display two pages simultaneously (gasp!) just like a real book. This also has the benefit that the reader closes up an protects the screens when you aren’t using it.

I imagine it coming in three different sizes to match a small mass-market paperback, the larger trade-paper or hardcover size, and then a deluxe textbook sized monster. If it had a color display rather than just black and white so much the better but, personally, I’d rather keep the power efficiency of the eInk technology that most eReaders are coming with these days.

I also dream of having one of these in the big textbook sized model and displaying a beautiful grid-map of a combat encounter for a D&D game. That’s a little pie-in-the-sky though.

Bottom line: this idea is free to anyone that wants to manufacturer a gadget like this. Though, if you wanted to give me a free one I wouldn’t pass up that deal either.

I’ve often wondered whether something like this isn’t in the works somewhere. Because we do tend to be rather attached to the idea of having something we open, and the closing of it really would protect the screen in a nice and convenient way.
It seems like a very nice idea to me.

There is the question of having a keyboard or something, the way the 2nd generation kindle does, or some other kind of interface, I guess? I feel like a keyboard is a pretty primitive interface, in general, and that one should be able to do better than that, but it’s a start.
