The CORE RPG

By J.A. Dettman

No, I’m not making a roleplaying adaptation of The Core. CORE is the what I’m currently calling this little kernel of a RPG idea that I’ve been noodling around with. Here’s the basic idea:

  • The basic die mechanic is that players roll (minimum) 2d10 when they want to accomplish something. The target number is always 14.
  • All characters have four broad Traits that define their Personal History, Culture, Profession and a central Talent. When a player can bring one of his character’s Traits to bear on a situation, he gets to roll an additional d10.
  • In addition to Traits, characters have a number of narrower Specialties within their Traits. When a player can bring one of his Specialties to bear on a situation, he gets to roll an additional d10 (for a total of +2d10).
  • Situational bonuses/penalties always involve gaining/losing a die. Remember, the target number never changes.
  • The probabilities are as follows:  (xd10=chance of success), 2d10=28%, 3d10=53%, 4d10=70%, 5d10=81%, 6d10=88%.

I’m not entirely sure where I’m going with CORE, at the moment. I’m thinking of using it to work up a Running from the Demon scenario and putting out there ala John Harper’s Lady Blackbird or Danger Patrol.

I suppose it all depends on how ambitious I’m feeling.
